Supported therapeutic exercise program (STEP)

MOVE aims to advance inclusion through all of its programs and services. Each program is focused on eliminating physical and financial barriers that individuals living with disabilities encounter while seeking to engage in regular physical activity.

MOVE’s Supported Therapeutic Exercise Program (STEP) provides supported therapeutic exercise and access to adapted equipment to individuals in the community who need support to exercise.

STEP includes the development of individualized exercise programs, full access to MOVE’s specialized gym equipment, one-on-one therapy by a registered Kinesiologist or Athletic Therapist, group exercise programs, and support from trained staff and volunteers.

Once an initial assessment has been completed by our Kinesiologist or Athletic Therapist, an exercise program tailored to your needs and abilities will be created. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.

At MOVE we predominantly work with individuals with neurological conditions including but not limited to: Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, cerebral palsy, neurological disease, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease or motor neuron disease.

What does an initial assessment involve/ do I have to do one before starting at MOVE?

Yes, all of our members must complete an initial assessment prior to starting at MOVE. Assessments take an hour and fifteen minutes and include collecting your health history, functional abilities, and fitness goals. Our trained rehabilitation therapists will also take you on a tour of our facility and the equipment MOVE has to offer.

Do you offer direct billing?

How do I apply for financial assistance?

MOVE offers financial assistance to those who qualify, all of our subsidies are first come first serve. As we have a limited number, our subsidies are 6 months in duration then the member needs to re-apply. Members must agree to coming at least once/week in order to keep the subsidy. We have a waiting list for subsidies therefore after 6 months you will need to re-apply and then be on the waiting list. This way more people will have access to the subsidies.

Our application can be found HERE. Along with our application MOVE requires your most recent notice of assessment or personal tax return, BC care card and proof of current Victoria residency. Please bring all necessary documents to your initial assessment.

What are your COVID-19 safety precautions?

MOVE is running by appointment only at this time, as well as following all guidelines from Provincial health authorities with strict procedures in place to ensure all members, staff and volunteers are safe and healthy. This includes mandatory masks, temperature and health checks prior to every appointment and an increase in cleaning and sanitization of all equipment.
